Programme of Assessment of the Sustainable Potentiality of Live Resources of the Exclusive Economic Zone -Programme REVIZEE is one of the most relevant Brazilian programmes on the field of environment, aiming at producing an inventory of all marine live resources and the environmental aspects of their existence, defining their bio-mass and the potentialities of sustainable capture (http://www.mre.gov.br/ndsg/textos/meiamb-i.htm). The region of interest comprises the defined exclusive economical zone - from 12 to 200 nautical miles. Marine remote sensing plays a special role in this project, providing sea surface temperature (SST) images, acquired for NOAA-14 satellite, for the determined area. Sea surface temperature is an important factor in determination of species distribution. The SST images can be used to identify upwellings and locate termal fronts and limit areas between cold and warm water where certain species gather. This paper describes the new methodology for sea surface temperature variability analysis used in Programme REVIZEE -Central Score, encompassing: a) images from the infrared channels of AVHRR/NOAA-15 sensor; b) derived SST data with ±0.5 °C accuracy, due to new processes of atmospheric correction and cloud detection developed by CPTEC/INPE for the local atmospheric conditions; c) the better spatial resolution of the sensor (1.1 Km); d) temporal resolution of approximately 24h between images; e) images from an area absent of remote sensing data - the central coast of Brazil, f) a developed algorithm for images change detection and grouping, according to the features the project wants to emphasize.
