Rugged laptop computers coupled with portable weather satellite reception systems, and internet data sources enable real-time access to both 4 km and 1.1 km resolution infrared (IR) and visible (VIS) imagery which can be manipulated for use in ocean current and weather event location and analysis. Satellite information may be used for pure oceanographic applications as well as surface weather and sea-state analysis and forecasts. Weather related events such as rapidly developing lows and Gulf Stream north wall events-often combined with dynamic fetch conditions-are influenced by sea surface temperature and temperature gradients. Precisely locating and tracking surface temperatures is also critical in routing vessels and determining areas to be avoided to minimize duration of encounter with heavy weather. Using commercial satellite & Internet weather software systems data from NOAA satellites 12, 14, & 15 can be zoomed, profiled, color enhanced, tiled, and geo-referenced to provide accurate and highly usable images within minutes of a satellite pass. National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Satellite Active Archive (SAA) provides satellite files for all infrared and visible channels (1-5) for each NOAA polar satellite orbit. Data may be downloaded from the Internet database within one (1) hour of a pass, and then compared and combined with other analysis and weather data. Using a combination of real-time capture, satellite active archive and Internet weather resources a vessel operator, meteorologist, or oceanographer can quickly and accurately determine real-time sea surface conditions.
