Applications of multispectral imagery (MSI) in marine environments include detecting effluents, monitoring coral reefs, locating shipwrecks, and tracking marine mammals. However, these objects are often very low contrast relative to the sunlight reflected and scattered by water. A method was developed at SRI International to subtract the clutter and reveal hidden features. This paper presents examples of the algorithm performance on images taken from airborne MSI systems flying over coastal waters, and discusses the important sensor and environmental considerations for effective use of the technique.
