摘要

The Special Events Imager (SEI) is a dual-purpose mission capable of meeting both scientific and operational goals. The scientific goals include detecting, monitoring, quantifying, and predicting transient events and short-term processes necessary to understand and predict the response of marine and terrestrial ecosystem dynamics to long-term climatic change. Operational goals include observation of regional scale weather phenomena, including hurricanes and mesoscale storms, with higher spatial and temporal resolution than currently available onboard the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES). The SEI instrument is a small, visible-band imager designed to be flown onboard GOES. The instrument will acquire multispectral, high spatial resolution (300 m) observations in the visible to near infrared spectrum (380-1000 nm) of regional (～300 km * 300 km) events with ～10 minute updates. Such rapid updates cannot be achieved with polar orbiting satellites, and will permit dynamic processes to be temporally resolved and studied. In particular, tidal aliasing of imagery from polar satellites can be assessed and possibly removed from imagery of the coastal ocean. The combined high spatial and temporal resolution will assist in hazard detection (floods, volcanoes, toxic blooms) and monitoring. In this paper, we provide a description of the SEI instrument including predicted performance for marine applications.
