New Jersey is richly endowed by a multi billion dollar coastal economy associated with ports and maritime commerce, coastal tourism, commercial and recreational fisheries and aquaculture. A seasonal field survey was conducted to examine the spectral characteristics of the estuarine and coastal (Case 2) waters of New Jersey to maximize information from AVIRIS data. AVIRIS reflectance spectra were retrieved using the solar and atmospheric contributions with the Modtran radiative transfer model. The spectra from the georeferenced locations representing various water conditions (i.e., riverine and estuarine) were matched with the simulated specific inherent optical properties (SIOP) and verified with in situ measurements. The goal of the project is to develop remote sensing methodology as a too in aiding the measurement of the water quality (i.e., harmful algal blooms and their long term consequences of ecosystem changes) in nearshore waters.
