Assessing plankton communities with multi-frequency hydroacoustics in estuarine inlets of the southeastern united states

Between May 1993 and May 1998, plankton communities were studied with both traditional plankton nets and multi-frequency hydroacoustics within one of three coastal inlets in South Carolina and Georgia. Changes in the number of frequencies used, acoustic frequencies sampled, sampling periodicity, and the depth of each data bin represented advancements in the technology during the sampling time period. Inverse calculations enabled estimates of abundance by particle size for comparisons with some catches from plankton nets. Estimates of relative biovolume of several taxonomic groups were significantly correlated with net collections, particularly in nearshore coastal waters. Lower correlations were found within the dynamic inlets, where high spatial and temporal variability in the plankton and water masses is the general pattern. Changes in vertical distribution of the plankton community responded to both cyclic (diel and tidal) and stochastic (wind) environmental variations. Generally, the plankton community indicated an increased abundance and uniform distribution throughout the water column during night. Resuspension of fine particles off the bottom were directly related to tidal changes in water velocity. Plankton size classes appeared to layer within the water column with the smallest scatters deepest. Spatial distribution of plankton across coastal inlets responded to numerous inter-related physical and meteorological conditions, including tidal stage and bottom topography.
