The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) has developed a java-based search, order, and subsetting interface for NOAA/NASA Polar Pathfinder gridded data archived at NSIDC. The "Graphical Interface for Subsetting, Mapping, and Ordering" (GISMO) is accessible from the World Wide Web, and currently provides search and order capabilities for AVHRR 1.25- and 5-km AVHRR Pathfinder data; and SSM/I EASE-Grid 12.5- and 25-km Pathfinder data for the polar regions. Future data access may include TOVS Pathfinder atmospheric parameters, and SMMR-SMM/I Pathfinder sea ice concentration data. The GISMO is meant to work with gridded data only. End users conduct a typical query by specifying a data set of interest and/or keywords, specific parameters or channels, date range, and geographic region by interactively selecting a rectangular area of interest. Data are subsetted and automatically staged to an anonymous ftp site for user access. This interface provides a simple and user-friendly tool for accessing NOAA/NASA Polar Pathfinder data for oceanographers and atmospheric scientists, and for the crysopheric research community.
