Tropical wetland environments of northern Australia are subject to extreme seasonal and inter-annual variations in weather conditions. The highly variable nature of these systems has implications for the selection of remotely sensed data for ecologicalhabitat studies conducted in these environments. In the case of mapping the wetland nesting habitats of the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) the environmental variables that control nesting habitat distribution are highly seasonal in nature. Image selection is thus crucial to the successful outcome of current ongoing research aimed at documenting nesting habitat availability across the coastal wetlands of the Northern Territory. This paper describes the process of image selection for mapping these habitats and discusses the issues and problems associated with image selection for studies of tropical coastal wetlands in general.
