"Experimental surveys for the assessment of juveniles" JUVESU (FAIR CT97-3374)- project aims to evaluate new methodologies for experimental surveys of the distribution and abundance of early juveniles (about 6 months old) of several pelagic species (anchovy, sardine, mackerel, horse mackerel…). In the framework of JUVESU project the performance for fish detecting of a LIDAR (Light Detecting and Ranging) sensor on board an aircraft is being compared with the usual shipborne acoustic systems. The ship survey serves to check for the performance of the LIDAR system, and provides the species identification of the detections. A second goal of the project is the study of the role of marine environment in the spatial distribution of the early juveniles. To that purpose some oceanographic parameters (water temperature, salinity, pigment concentration and turbidity) are measured from shipborne instruments (CTD, fluorometer and transmisometter) and with airborne and satellite remote sensors (Daedalus, AVHRR, SeaWiFS). Two field surveys were held in August/September 1998 and 1999 in the south of Europe, with the participation of all the teams involved in the project. The two target areas were the Western Iberian Atlantic coasts and the Southeast part of the Bay of Biscay. All the acquired data were included in a common Geographic Information System, which will facilitate all subsequent discussions and synthesis work.
