Oil spill transport in marine environment: numerical modeling

A hybrid 3D flow/particle model to predict processes of the oil slick transport in sea coastal waters is developed on a basis of the random particle technique. In the hybrid model to be discussed, the "particles" represent components of the oil in a very direct sense. The number of model particles used in an application is determined by statistical considerations of oil transport prediction. Various algorithms are implemented in the model to describe the transport and fate of oil released into the marine environment. Prediction of the oil fate is based on the combined effect of the advection, spreading, evaporation, and biochemical degradation of the oil. Numerical experiments with oil released from an continuous source have been made for the south-western part of the Caspian Sea.
