A simple modification is proposed to the standard dark water atmospheric correction method for ocean colour imagery from satellites such as SeaWiFS, to eliminate negative water leaving radiance which can result from the extrapolation of aerosol effects from the near infrared. The standard method uses a library of aerosol models, finding the two models for which the retrieved water leaving radiance in two near infrared channels is closest to zero and combining them to make it exactly zero (the dark water approximation). These models are then used to calculate the water leaving radiance in the visible. The modification is applied wherever the standard correction results in negative water leaving radiance in the visible. The aerosol library is re-examined, and an attempt is made to find an alternative pair of models which may be combined to give water leaving radiance that is zero in the near infrared, but non-negative in the visible.
