Remote sensing based on function-zoning of the coastal zone in Hainan island

摘要

How to develop and utilize the coastal zone in Hainan Island reasonably? It is a key problem for sustainable development of the island. Based on inventories of natural resources and environment, the coastal zone can be divided into different function areas for socioeconomic development. Supported by remote sensing and GIS techniques, especially through interactive image interpretation of Landsat TM, a series of thematic maps on natural resources and environment in the coastal zone in Hainan Island are sequentially mapped during 90's. Then the maps are integrated and analyzed with other data sets from traditional sources in a GIS environment, so that a clear and complete picture on the coastal zone, from function zoning point of view, are formulated gradually. In fact, according to "a brief regulation of marine function zoning in China", the coastal zone has been divided into 5 regions and 23 sub-regions in the way as mentioned before. The results from the project have been played an important role in management and decision-making for sustainable development of Hainan Island, especially its coastal zone.
