The water reflectance spectra, R, obtained in the outer part of Saginaw Bay conjointly with the concentrations of coexisting phytoplankton chlorophyll (chl), suspended sediments (sm) and dissolved organics (doc) showed, in addition to a maximum at 555nm, a distinct maximum at 490-510 nm. Given the measured chl, sm and doc contents, the latter spectral feature can not be simulated considering solely the absorption and elastic scattering events of sun light interactions with the aquatic medium. Inclusion into numerical simulations of the doc fluorescence impact on the upwelling radiance resulted in a nearly perfect fit between the modeled and measured R-spectra. The impact of doc fluorescence on the accuracy of water quality retrieval was further assessed using the Levenberg-Marquardt multivariate optimization technique. It is shown that in the absence of sm, waters rich in either chl or doc the upwelling radiance can be significantly altered due to fluorescence, which is conductive to substantial water quality retrieval errors.
