This study applies change vector analysis using normalized multidate data from Landsat Multispectral Scanner toexamine coastal ecosystem changes in the vicinity of Chincoteague and Assateague Islands, Virginia. The modified technique measured absolute angular changes and spectral change magnitude of Landsat data from 1973-1991. Polar plots and spherical statistics summarized change vectors to quantify and visualize both magnitude and direction of change. Results graphically and statistically distinguished systematic changes in 1) tidal stage and bay-bottom cover change, 2) shore erosional features, 3) depositional landforms, and 4) disturbance in maritime forests. Changes in the visible green-red bands were distinct from those in red-near-IR bands.
