The SeaWiFS ocean color sensor offers a new capability for providing information on chlorophyll, other pigments, and suspended sediments in coastal waters, provided a coastal atmospheric correction is applied. The standard global algorithm generally overestimates by a factor of 2 in the U..S Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic Bight. A regional algorithm for chlorophyll can be applied, however a coastal atmospheric correction must also be implemented in order for SeaWiFS results to be consistent with field measurements.
