In view of depleting reserve of metallurgical coking coal, environmental pollution of coke making, need for smaller units for ironmaking and certain limitations inherent in the blast furnace process, there has been a search for ironmaking processes, alternative to blast furnace. Although, blast furnace continues to be the most efficient route of bulk ironmaking and also the single largest source of primary iron, the metallic requirements of steel production are also met through scraps, Directly Reduced Iron (DRI), Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI), etc. The limitations inherent in the blast furnace process, have actually led to the emergence of Direct Reduction (DR) and Smelt Reduction (SR) processes of ironmaking. The sponge iron (DRI) is produced by direct reduction of solid iron ore to metallic iron by using solid or gaseous reductant in a specially designed reactor. The short supply of pig iron and ever increasing demand for ferrous scrap for use in secondary steel sectors and ferrous foundries have drawn considerable attention to the production of sponge iron. Substitution of scrap and pig iron by sponge iron in the feed materials for steelmaking, in mini and integrated steel plants, and for ironmaking in foundries, is a viable solution. In advanced countries there is a demand for DRI as a diluent for tramp elements. This alternative feed material needs special attention for technology update.
