The Ispat Mexicana SA de CV (IMEXSA) pelletising plant is located at Lazaro Cardenas on the west coast of Mexico. It is the primary source of feed stock for the adjacent direct reduction (DR) plants and steelmaking facilities. The initial design of the pellet plant began in 1981 for 3 Mtpa of DR grade pellets using local concentrate received by pipeline. Several construction delays, an ownership change, and a decision to use imported concentrates delivered in 60 000 to 90 000 tonnes ship cargoes required flowsheet modifications and additions. The design concepts are described for the plant which includes concentrate regrind to final pelletising particle size. Pellet production began in December 1996 to produce 3.5 Mtpa. Together with 1.5 Mtpa from Pena Colorada as 50 per cent joint ownership, this satisfies the pellet requirements for a Midrex megamod at 1.2 Mtpa and the four reactors of HYL III process at 2 Mtpa to increase the production in the steelmaking plant and continuous casting to 3 Mtpa of slab. IMEXSA's pellet plant philosophy of a high quality 'minimum gangue, high total iron' DR pellet at minimum cost, was developed through two years of operation. The versatility built into the plant, and techniques used to predict the operating setpoints was proven as the plant operated on the modified chemistry with 18 different ore blends from seven imported concentrates in 1997 and 1998. All the blends were processed to obtain high DR quality pellets.
