It's expected that the world economy will face a stable and continuous growth in the demandrnof iron ore, reaching more than two billion tonnes per year within the next year. After decadesrnexploiting resources with high content of iron ore, now the industry faces the challenge to exploitrnand benefi ciate more complex ores.rnAccording to the industrial practice, the fl otation technology is one of the most important andrneffective benefi ciation processes to deal with low grade iron ores around the world. However, evenrnwith this, it is still necessary to search for new processing routes or promote the optimisation ofrnthe existing circuits.rnThe broad application of this technology is an outcome that deeply relies on the proper selectionrnof fl otation chemicals specifi cally designed for each system. New collectors are in continuousrndevelopment as fl otation performance signifi cantly relies upon their optimisation.rnThe reverse iron ore fl otation in Brazil, mainly constituted by haematite and quartz, uses etherrnamines as collector for silica minerals and caustic corn starch as depressor for haematite. Thernprocess selectivity is highly impacted by the features of the etheramine, such as:rn1. mono or di-etheramine,rn2. neutralisation degree,rn3. chain length,rn4. branched or linear chain,rn5. the fl otation pH, andrn6. the size distribution of the fl otation feed.rnThis paper describes the experience obtained from laboratory and industrial trials on differentrnores, conducted to improve the selectivity and recovery in the reverse iron ore fl otation by selectingrnthe required collector for low-grade ores.
