Following civil war in Sierra Leone, London Mining Plc obtained the mining license in 2006 andrncommenced activity to redevelop the Marampa mining and processing operations. The Sierra LeonernMarampa mine is a brownfi eld development effort, having been operated by a few companies sincernthe 1930s until low iron ore prices forced closure. Peak production of the preceding operations wasrnapproximately 2.5 Mt/a in the 1960s. There are two virgin ore deposits of interest for developmentrnas well as a resource comprised of tailings accumulated from previous operations. The Maramparntailings operation (Phase 1a) is being implemented fi rst with a 1.8 Mt/a plant producing 66 per centrnFe sinter feed, expandable to 3.6 Mt/a in a Phase 1b. The fi rst phase is currently under constructionrnwith start-up expected in the third quarter of 2011. Further expansion (Phase 2) that includesrnthe development of the virgin deposits is currently under prefeasibility study and targets a fi nalrn16 Mt/a concentrate production. Outotec partnered with London Mining to develop the magneticrnseparation fl ow sheet using SLon VPHGMS machines to process the Marampa tailings (haematite)rnmaterial. The fl ow sheet development process started with sample characterisation and detailedrnparametric investigations to evaluate SLon performance. The fi nal fl ow sheet confi guration,rnincluding expected circuit recoveries and concentrate quality, demonstrates the performance ofrnthe SLon VPHGMS circuit for iron ore tailings.
