Mineral processing is characterised by a constant adaptation to changing raw materials andrnmarket conditions. It is the link between the mined raw material and a marketable product. Asrna lot of high-grade reserves are exploited, a steady deterioration of raw material quality can bernobserved. At the same time, the customer's requirement for product purity and consistent qualityrnincreases.rnOver recent years benefi ciation techniques for iron ore fi nes have become more important inrnorder to achieve a maximised utilisation of ore resources and to produce competitive productsrnaccording to international standards.rnMany high capacity iron ore benefi ciation plants that target the production of fi nes focus onrngravity separation processes using fl uidised bed classifi ers and spirals or wet high intensityrnmagnetic separators as an alternative. This paper demonstrates the suitability of utilising thernallfl ux~? two-stage fl uidised bed classifi ers to treat iron ore particles up to 2 mm in size as wellrnas showing how the high capacity gaustec~? wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS)rntechnology offers several advantages compared to other WHIMS technology.rnThe combination of the allfl ux~? and gaustec~? technologies offer the following benefi ts:rnThe two-stage fl uidised bed classifi cation extracts a signifi cant amount of concentrate from thernfeed. This in turn reduces the feed capacity required for the gaustec? WHIMS located downstream.rnThe second classifi cation stage produces a -0.5 + 0.1 mm product and a -0.1 mm product. Therneffi ciency of the magnetic separation on these classifi ed products is high due to optimised settingsrnfor each size fraction.
